贵州威宁草海国家级自然保护区, 位于贵州省西部威宁县县城西南面，保护区面积120平方公里, 其中水域面积46.5平方公里。是一个完整、典型的高原湿地生态系统、是黑颈鹤等228种鸟类的重要越冬地和迁徙中转站；是中国著名三大高原湖泊（草海、滇池，青海湖）之一、贵州最大的高原天然淡水湖泊、中国Ⅰ级重要湿地、国家4A级旅游景区；是世界十大观鸟基地，被美国国家地理杂志评选为世界上最受欢迎的旅游胜地，被誉为“贵州旅游皇冠上的一块蓝宝石”；有“高原明珠”、“鸟类王国”等美誉。 1985年2月8日贵州省人民政府(批复)（85）黔府通45号“省人民政府关于建立威宁草海自然保护区有关问题的批复”,成立了草海省级自然保护区；

全天开放；草海自然保护区外围开放，内部不对外开放。
