西湖，位于浙江省杭州市西面，是中国大陆首批国家重点风景名胜区和中国十大风景名胜之一。它是中国大陆主要的观赏性淡水湖泊之一，也是现今《世界遗产名录》中少数几个和中国唯一一个湖泊类文化遗产。西湖周围的群山，属于天目山余脉。根据岩性差别和山势高低，可分为内、外两圈。外圈有北高峰、天马山、天竺山、五云山等，属高丘陵地形，山体主要由志留、泥盆纪岩屑砂岩、石英砂岩构成，岩性较坚硬，不易风化侵蚀。峰峦挺秀，溪涧纵横，流水清洌，是西湖泉水最多地带。
